Mindhunter season 3 uncertain, David Fincher may revisit Netflix series

Season 3 of Netflix’s Mindhunter is not coming any time soon.

The future of the show has been put on hold while series director and executive producer David Fincher works on his first directorial feature for the streamer, Mank. And, in the time since season 2 of the thriller debuted in August, the actors’ contracts with the show have lapsed, allowing them to seek out other work if they choose.

“David is focused on directing his first Netflix film Mank and on producing the second season of Love, Death and Robots,” a Netflix spokesperson Wednesday said in a statement to EW. “He may revisit Mindhunter again in the future, but in the meantime felt it wasn’t fair to the actors to hold them from seeking other work while he was exploring new work of his own.”

Mank, which is Fincher’s first film as a director since 2014’s Gone Girl, follows screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz’s tumultuous development of Orson Welles’ 1941 film Citizen KaneLove, Death and Robots, which is currently in production on its sophomore season, is an anthology series of short animated stories that span the genres of science fiction, fantasy, horror, and comedy.

Season 2 of Mindhunter once again starred Jonathan Groff, Anna Torv, and Holt McCallany as members of the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit tasked with speaking to the nation’s most infamous serial killers in an effort to better understand their psychology. The second installment of the Joe Penhall-created series focused heavily on the Atlanta child murders.

It’s not all bad news for Mindhunters, though. In the past, the cast has expressed interest in the future of the show. Speaking with EW in November, Groff said that season 3 wouldn’t happen until “[Fincher] was ready to tell the next step of the story” but also wanted to remind people that “it took a year and a half between season 1 and season 2, so I’m just following David’s lead in every way shape and form.” McCallany, too, has said he is hopeful that the show will have many more seasons.
