The first social media reactions are in, and Birds of Prey is flying high. The female-led superhero movie, in theaters Feb. 7, is garnering praise for its lively, action-packed plot and starry cast, led by Margot Robbie.
The Suicide Squad spin-off, starring Robbie as Harley Quinn, follows the antiheroine as she gathers a killer lady gang to bring down crime lord Black Mask (Ewan McGregor), in order to protect a young girl (Ella Jay Basco). The core cast features Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, and Rosie Perez. Christina Hodson penned the script, and Cathy Yan directed.
“#BirdsofPrey is a blast. Stylish, kooky, and gut-bustingly funny, it sings when it lets it’s cast just go ham, especially the gonzo Margot Robbie,” Slashfilm writer Hoai-Tran Bui said. “Lulls a bit in the middle and is a little on the slight side, but a completely fun watch.”
Comicbook.com’s Brandon Davis wrote, “#BirdsOfPrey is a lot of fun and violent as hell. The Birds are so entertaining and distinctly different from each other. Ewan McGregor is so sinister and often hilarious.”
Several early viewers also pointed out the particular female rage conveyed through the movie, as the women confront not just a bad guy, but a society that undervalues them.
“#BirdsOfPrey is gleefully angry. Harley, Huntress, Canary, Renee, Cass – they’re FURIOUS (for good reason), and express that fury in vastly diff ways,” producer and editor Mallory Yu tweeted. “It understood (and validated) that very specific kind of female anger from years of being subjected to the patriarchy.”
Pop culture writer Yolanda Machado celebrated the ensemble cast, as well as the work done by the women behind the camera, saying “Christina Hodson’s script was lively, funny, & everything I’ve been waiting for in the DCEU. Dir Cathy Yan created a Gotham that I can’t wait to revisit.”
She added, “If the DCEU doesn’t hand everything over to women now, they are clearly out of their minds.”
